New York, NY – Cash Money/Universal Motown superstar Lil Wayne dominated rap music at the 2009 Grammy Awards winning four awards including Best Rap Album for his blockbuster multi-platinum release Tha Carter III. With a total of eight nominations – more than any other artist – Lil Wayne was the standout performer at the most prestigious musical event of the year.

“Lollipop” featuring Static Major earned the title for Best Rap Song and “A Milli” was voted Best Solo Rap Performance. These are the New Orleans native's first Grammy awards for his own album.

Lil Wayne ignited the Grammy stage with two powerful showstoppers. He delivered a heart-wrenching tribute to New Orleans with jazz musicians Allen Touissant, Terrence Blanchard and the Dirty Dozen brass band. His cool performance of “Swagga Like Us,” brought rap’s greatest on the stage together — Lil Wayne with T.I., Jay-Z, Kanye West and M.I.A.

Lil Wayne became the first artist since 2005 to sell one million albums in the first week of release when Tha Carter III sold over 1 million units in its debut week. The Carter III is the best-selling album release of 2008, having sold well over 2.7 million copies domestically since its release in June. The album held the No. 1 position on the Billboard’s Top 200 for three weeks and “Lollipop” topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for five weeks. In August, Lil Wayne set a record for charting 13 tracks as a lead or featured artist on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart simultaneously, including the No. 1s “Lollipop” and “A Milli.”

The Grammy accolades wrap up a whirlwind year of career firsts for Lil Wayne. New York, NY — Cash Money/Universal Motown Records multi-platinum recording artist Lil Wayne reclaims the number one album slot in the country this week. Concurrently the prolific artist seizes three positions in the Top Ten on the Rhythmic Radio Charts. Lil Wayne sizzles with “A Milli” at #8, “Got Money” at #10 and his smash hit “Lollipop” at #1 for the 12^th consecutive week.

With this latest coup, Lil Wayne dethrones 50 Cent’s previous record for “In Da Club,” set in 2003 for the most weeks at #1. After years of crumbling CD sales, the music industry got a pleasant shock recently when a rapper named Lil Wayne delivered some big, old-fashioned sales figures. More than one million copies of his new album, "Tha Carter III," sold in the first week, making it the fastest-selling album since 2005. The New Orleans rapper, born Dwayne Carter Jr., is known for his scratchy voice, inventive wordplay and versatile delivery. He spoke to us recently about his working methods, his mix tapes and his best-selling album.

WSJ: For people who haven't followed your music, or who don't even listen to rap, what makes your new album so different?

Mr. Carter: The difference is the maturity, period. I put my all into everything. I make sure that it's better than good.

You're famous for the number of guest spots you do and mix tapes you're on. Is there a risk fans will get tired of hearing you?

There's a reason not to do it because sometimes you can hurt yourself. If you've been on too many songs it can get old. For my situation, I just make sure that everything I do is great. I'm still doing collaborations.

What does a person do to celebrate a million sales in a week?

I think everybody went and had a party. I was recording.

You do a lot of that. Is there a certain kind of studio setting you prefer for recording?

I record anywhere and everywhere. On my bus and in the green room before a show. If you care that much about where you're at when you do it, you're not a rapper, you're an interior decorator.

You've been making hip-hop records since you were about 15 years old. What's changed the most since then?

Of course the popularity of the music has grown. At the same time, financially and economically, it has decreased. But thank God, I think I've brought a change to that. The opportunities are a lot easier right now. Anyone can be a rapper. But there's so many of us that it's an honor to be picked to be one of the best.

How do you keep track of your ideas? Do you have a notebook of rhymes waiting for music?

I don't write my raps. I don't have time to put writing down on paper. If I did, I'd be a lot more dangerous.

On one song, "Dr. Carter," clichés and unoriginal rhymes are a sickness that you diagnose in other rappers. Do you ever feel trapped or bored by the conventions of hip hop?

It's always a wide open genre. The real fans kick it to the real artists. I'm going to make a lot of albums. I'll try to venture into other things as well. I can act a little bit, I think. But I'm going to make sure it's well worth it. I don't want to lose focus.

You're one of the most downloaded artists on underground music networks. If people are so used to taking your music for free why do you think so many went out and bought the CD?

The answer is easy. The answer is because of me. No gimmicks, nothing that I do with marketing. I don't have a great advertising team or a street team. That's the reason I'm most downloaded and MySpaced. That's me. My baby picture is on the album and the album is full of good music. Even the people who did download it [without paying], that's a sign of respect. Trust me, it's respect -- if you don't believe me you can call my bank. I don't have a problem with downloading. I don't have a problem with anything.

Since the release of his last CD, the platinum selling Tha Carter II, Lil Wayne has guest appearances on over 70 songs for other artists including Fat Joe’s 2008 Grammy nominated single “Make It Rain,” DJ Khaled’s “We Taking Over,” and Wyclef Jeans’ “Sweetest Girl.” He also released a duet CD with Bryan “Birdman” Williams titled Like Father, Like Son in 2006 which was a critical and commercial success.

Lil Wayne has a total of five tracks on the iTunes Top 100, more than any other artist. One week before album release, a fourth advance track was made available, “You Ain’t Got Nuthin” featuring Juelz Santana and Fabolous. On MySpace.com, Lil Wayne became the first artist ever to attract 100 million page views.

The “Lollipop” music video has been in top rotation on BET, MTV, MTV2, FUSE, MTV Jams, MTV Hits, MTV Tr3s and Mun2. A full complement of taped and live appearances is scheduled for the week of album release.

Anticipation for Tha Carter III has been running at a fever pitch for a full year, as Lil Wayne has emerged as hip-hop’s most recognizable and in-demand lyricist. His collaborations and step-out performances have sold over 50 million copies on albums by such artists as Destiny’s Child, Chris Brown, Lloyd, Fall Out Boy, and Enrique Iglesias to name a few.

A late-February review in The New York Times described a Lil Wayne concert in New Jersey as a “riveting hour-long performance that felt positively historic.”

New York, NY - Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown superstar Lil Wayne, anointed in Vibe Magazine's November 07's cover story as "The best rapper alive" was honored once again this past weekend at the BET 2007 Hip-Hop Awards, pulling down two trophies at the prestigious event.  The prolific rapper was crowned MVP – beating out hip-hop icons such as Jay-Z and Kanye West – as well as snagging the coveted fan-voted Alltel Wireless People's Champ Award with Cash Money mogul/artist and co-founder Birdman. New York, NY - It was one of the last trophies handed out and one of the most coveted… Cash Money/Universal Motown icons, Birdman and Lil Wayne, closed the 7th Annual BET Awards in style last evening, winning the Viewers Choice Award for their hit video and single, “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” from their smash collaborative album, Like Father, Like Son.  The hip-hop icons appeared onstage surrounded by Cash Money’s offspring – of the preschool variety, that is – with Lil Wayne thanking his young daughter, who joined him on stage, saying “Thank you my daughter. Thank you family.  Thank all the partners that came before me. Thank you hip-hop.”

“It’s about time,” quipped Birdman, waving the award victoriously in the air, also acknowledging that the Cash Money combine is truly a family affair.  Birdman (aka Bryan Williams) founded the legendary Cash Money Empire along with his brother, Ronald ‘Slim’ Williams, in the hardscrabble streets of New Orleans.  The two brothers forged Cash Money from a start-up hip-hop imprint more than 15 years ago into a 35 million selling multi-platform empire known around the globe. The 7th Annual BET Awards were broadcasted live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, honoring the best in entertainment in 15 categories, including music, film, video and sports.  The Viewers Choice Award is voted on by fans and viewers of BET.

“Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” was the first single from Lil Wayne and Birdman’s historic platinum duet album, Like Father, Like Son. The album went on to gather a total audience of more than 60 million radio listeners, attract more than 30,000 ringtone views/plays a week, and become a mainstay for video viewers throughout the fall and winter of 2006. It is recognized as one of the most played clips on BET throughout the entire year.   

Lil Wayne was nominated this past fall for BET’s inaugural foray into the hip-hop award sweepstakes, the First Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards. The charismatic rapper garnered 3 prestigious nods: Hip-Hop CD Of The Year for his platinum-plus opus, Tha Carter II, as well as receiving nominations for Lyricist Of The Year, and Hip-Hop MVP of the year.

(New York, NY) Cash Money superstar Lil Wayne pulled down three nominations for the First Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, to be taped in Atlanta, GA on November 12, and air on November 15. The first ever hip-hop awards presented by the top rated network will pay homage to hip-hop’s global impact with an evening of awards and performances. The prolific Lil Wayne has been nominated for Hip-Hop CD of the Year for his platinum-plus opus, Tha Carter II, as well as receiving nominations for Lyricist of the Year and Hip-Hop MVP of the Year.


The award nods come during a flurry of end-of the year activity for the New Orleans native. His long awaited duet album Like Father Like Son with Cash Money founder and mentor Birdman hits stores on October 31. The first single “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” already garnering a crossover and urban radio audience of close to 50 million listeners. The song corralled 30,000 ringtone views/plays in the last week alone, and is the #1 most played video on BET and #4 on 106 & Park.


Lil Wayne is also enjoying success with the crossover buzz-song of 2006 “Shooter,” from Tha Carter II. One of the most talked about songs of the year, the groundbreaking track features Robin Thicke, and recently debuted in video form on MTV’s TRL and MTV2’s “Unleashed,” during which the video was played every hour on the hour. The song has garnered Wayne critical acclaim from such respected outlets at The New York Times and the video has become a fan favorite at MTV. The tireless hip-hop star is also featured on Outkast's next single, "Hollywood Divorce," from their Idelwild CD. The new song also guest stars Snoop Dogg, and the superstars will be joining forces in a new video to be shot sometime in the next few weeks.


The First Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards Show will be hosted by comedian Katt Williams, and held at the Fox Theater in Atlanta GA on November 12. The show is scheduled to air on BET on November 15 at 8:00pm EST.

Cash Money Records CEO’s Donate $3000 to the Morningside Park Children’s Program

Cash Money Scores a Goal with Soccer Program!

(New York, NY) – Cash Money Records CEO’s Ronald “Slim” Williams and his brother Bryan “Birdman” Williams are donating $3000 on behalf of their charity Cash Money For Kids to the Morningside Park Soccer Program in Miami.  The donation will go directly to the children’s soccer program for new equipment.  “We always believe in giving back to the community, and we want to make sure the kids have recreational outlets that may help them stay out of trouble.” states Ronald “Slim” Williams.  Bryan “Birdman” Williams says, “It’s important for young kids to be able to play safe and have fun.  Hopefully this will help the children of Morningside Park enjoy their day a little more.”

The Cash Money Records CEOs have a history of giving back to their community.  Each year including last year, they have held their Annual Turkey Give Away for needy families in their native city of New Orleans.  Displaced after Hurricane Katrina, the Williams brothers have adopted Miami as their new home base.
